The National Academy of Forensic Engineers (NAFE)® along with the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) are among a very limited group of professional societies designated to make recommendations to the Federal Courts under a special program to provide independent scientific and engineering experts to trial judges (in addition to experts provided by litigants) to assist the courts in the most complex technical cases.
The program administered by the American Academy for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) resulted from studies by the National Conference of Lawyers and Scientists (NCLS), a joint standing committee of AAAS and the Science and Technology Law Section of the American Bar Association (ABA) and will be titled as 'Court Appointed Scientific Experts (CASE).'
Coordination of the joint NSPE/NAFE participation will be made by NAFE, whose members are required to be registered as Professional Engineers (PE) and to be members of the NSPE.

NAFE recently endorsed the following position statement:
It is the position of the National Academy of Forensic Engineers (NAFE) that (1) the practice of forensic engineering constitutes the “practice of engineering” under state laws and regulations, and that (2) professional engineers performing forensic engineering services should fully comply with state engineering licensing laws and board rules and regulations.
NAFE joins the American Association of Engineering Societies (AAES)
The AAES is an organization of organizations representing many major engineering and technical societies including the NSPE. The AAES deals in matters related to the licensure of PEs in the Unites States, in international engineering accords, and it sponsors the Engineering Manpower Commission (EMC) in which nearly 100 universities and corporations participate.
